This page contains content about features that are outdated, or have possibly been removed from the game. These features only exist in older, outdated versions of TFC. This information is to be used at your own risk, as it is possible that is no longer correct in the current latest version of TFC: 0.79.29.922. It is also possible that this page is missing information regarding new mechanics in the current version. For a brief summary of accurate, up-to-date information, please check the Changelog.

Gender
Animals exist in two genders. Either male or female, as one might expect. You can check the gender of an animal visually, or by right-clicking the animal with an empty hand or non-grain item.
Feed Grain
Wheat Grain, Barley Grain, Rye Grain, and Oat Grain can be used to breed Livestock, and will also follow you. Note: Rice Grain does not work.
How to Breed Animals
Bring two animals of the same species and of different genders into the same proximity. You can either push them around or lure them with wheat grain.
Right click on each animal with grain to feed them. They will consume the grain and hearts will float over each animal. The animals will move together for a few seconds.
You can confirm the breeding was successful by right-clicking on the female. It will say "Pregnant" after "Female".
After a few months have passed, the female will give birth. Pigs will have many offspring, Sheep may have one to three and Cows will only have one.
Unlike all animals; chickens can be bred using a nest box. Hens will lay eggs, and if there's a rooster nearby, the egg will show a Fertilised tag on it.
Note: Pheasants, Deer and Squid cannot be bred. Wolves will breed with any piece of raw meat.
Effect of Animal Breeding
Animals have a "size" trait which is randomized when they spawn into the world that affects how the animal renders and how much meat is dropped when killed. When two animals mate, the resulting offspring have a size which is partially randomized, but also affected by the sizes of its parents (specifically, how its parent's sizes compare to the average for the species). In other words, breeding two animals which are larger than average will produce babies that have a statistically larger average size, and could possibly be larger in size than any animal that could spawn in the wild naturally. More traits are planned to be inheritable in the future.
