Obtaining

Barrels are crafted with 7 lumber of the same wood type. Barrels can be crafted from every different type of wood, but this has no effect on the barrel other than aesthetically.

Usage

BarrelGUI-L.png
  1. Selector Tabs - Toggle between liquid and item storage.
  2. Type Label - Displays what is currently contained within the barrel.
  3. Time Label - Displays the date and time the barrel was sealed.
  4. Liquid Gauge - Displays how much liquid is currently contained within the barrel.
  5. In/Out Button - Determines if the barrel can have liquids put in it, or taken out of it.
  6. Processing Slot - Input slot for buckets and items to be processed, and the output slot for finished products.
  7. Seal Button - Seals the barrel for processing and moving.
  8. Empty Button - Deletes all liquid from the barrel.
  9. Output Label - Displays what will be created when unsealed.

Liquid barrels are filled with buckets by either placing the full bucket inside the barrel, or by right-clicking on the barrel with full bucket in hand.

  1. Selector Tabs - Toggle between liquid and item storage.
  2. Seal Button - Seals the barrel for moving.
  3. Inventory Slots - Barrels can hold inventory similar to chests.

Once sealed a barrel can be broken down and moved. It will retain its contents, allowing the player to fill it in one location before moving it to another. This is especially helpful for filling the barrels near a water source. Barrels must be carried one at a time in the characters back slot (located to the right of the chest armor slot).

Fresh Water

Fresh Water barrels are used as a starting point for tannin and alcohols, as storage for drinking water, to quickly cool down heated items, to create jute fibers, and to turn scraped hides into prepared hides. Ten buckets will fill a single barrel. A full fresh water barrel will fill 20 Ceramic Jugs; or can process 50 jute, 33 small scraped hides, 25 medium scraped hides, or 20 large scraped hides.

Alcohol

Put one item of a specific crop in a fresh water barrel, and then click seal and wait 72 in-game hours for it to finish processing. There are currently 8 different alcohols that can be made.

Vinegar

Vinegar is made by adding a piece of fruit to an alcohol barrel, resealing it and waiting 8 in-game hours for it to finish processing. Take the resulting vinegar out of the barrel by placing an empty Bucket inside.

¹Food can be stored indefinitely in a sealed vinegar barrel to drastically reduce the rate at which it decays.

Lime Water

Lime Water Barrels are used to create mortar and turn raw hides into soaked hides. Ten buckets will fill a single barrel. A full lime water barrel can process 1,600 mortar, 33 small raw hides, 25 medium raw hides, or 20 large raw hides.

Tannin

Tannin is an organic chemical contained in certain woods. The only certain types of trees can be used to create tanning are; oak, birch, chestnut, douglas fir, hickory, maple, and sequoia. Tannin does not exist as an item, only as a type of liquid that can be contained and produced in a barrel. Tannin is used to tan prepared hides into leather. A full barrel of tannin can process 33 small prepared hides, 25 medium prepared hides, or 20 large prepared hides, producing 33 leather for small, 50 for medium, and 60 for large.

To fill a barrel with tannin, place a single log into a barrel of water, then click seal and wait 8 in-game hours for it to finish processing. The amount of liquid in the barrel will remain the same. After all of the liquid in a tannin barrel has been used, click the "Empty" button before being able to refill the barrel with more water to make more tannin.

Milk/Curdled Milk

Leave at least one bucket's worth of space in a milk barrel to add vinegar to create curdled milk. A full barrel of curdled milk made from 9 milk buckets and a single vinegar bucket will produce a single, max size, 160 oz block of cheese. Remove the empty bucket, then click seal and wait 8 in-game hours for it to finish processing.
