Refining --> Threshing?

You've been using the term "Refining" in your cereal updates. Would "Threshing" be a better choice (separating grain from a plant)? Unless you prefer to use a term that generalizes over more than just grains.

Also, maybe move nutrient info to a Planting section of Usage (i.e., usage of seeds), and add info on growth times and an image of growth stages (like in Agriculture)?

We've been using the word "refining" since the feature was implemented, it's even the official term used in the changelogs. The general term is better imo, since a lot of people don't know what "threshing" is without having to look it up. I agree that the usage section needs to be separated, I just haven't figured out how to do it yet. Feel free to submit a proof of concept for it. Growth times don't really work other than "very slow, slow, fast, etc" because they are so variable and dependent on the surrounding environment. In perfect conditions, a fast crop might grow in two months, but that exact same crop in bad conditions could take 8 months to grow. The images for growth stages are already in the block template, and there is a screenshot of the mature crop in the gallery. --Kittychanley (talk) 21:36, 9 June 2014 (UTC)
quick stab at it (and guessing at a few particulars, please correct if needed):
== Obtaining ==
Barley can be found growing in the wild between the seasons of Spring and Late Summer, and has a chance to regenerate during those seasons every year. Harvest the plant to obtain barley seeds as well as an average of 14 oz of barley if the crop is mature.
== Usage ==
=== Growing ===
To plant barley, right-click on farmland with a barley seed.
Barley grows very slowly relative to other crops, and its growth is affected by nutrients, light, temperature, farmland hydration, and neighbors:
  • Barley requires Nutrient A or fertilizer to grow and will stop growing if both are depleted. Fertilizer can be added at any time, but nutrient A can only be restored by growing soybean or greenbean, by allowing the farmland to lie fallow (nothing planted for a year), or by replacing the farmland with dirt and allowing grass to spread to it then converting it to farmland again.
  • Barley requires a light level (block or sun) of 9 to grow, and a minimum light level of 8 to stay alive (including "sky light" which remains at maximum even at night).(verify for TFC)
  • Barley requires a minimum temperature of 4℃ to grow, and a minimum temperature of 0℃ to stay alive.
  • Barley grows faster if its farmland is hydrated (within four blocks of still or flowing water).
  • Barley grows faster if planted in rows.(verify for TFC -- it's actually more complicated but that's probably enough)
To harvest a barley plant, left-click and hold on the barley plant. A barley plant will always drop at least one seed (higher Agriculture skill increases the chances of a second seed drop) and a mature barley plant drops an average of 14 oz. of barley.
