Sluices are crafted with three sticks and three lumber of any wood type.

Sluices are used primarily to prospect and gather ore, as well as obtain gems. When placed, sluices will scan an area that is 100 blocks in each horizontal direction, and 50 blocks down (201x201x50 Area), searching for veins of ore. To help with performance, this scan is only done when the sluice is first placed, and simply stores a list of all of the types of ore that were found in memory. This means that there only has to be a single block of a specific ore within the scan range for the sluice to produce small pieces of that ore.


  1. Soil Indicator - Displays how much soil the sluice currently has stored. Switches to "Overworked" when the sluice can no longer process soil in that chunk.
  2. Water Indicator - Icon turns blue when the sluice has the necessary flow of water.
  3. Progress Arrow - Displays progress for processing the current piece of soil.
  4. Output Slots - Output slots for small pieces of ore and gems.


Sluices can process both gravel and sand, using the term "soil" to refer to both in the interface. Using gravel increases the chances of getting ore, while using sand increases the chances of getting gems. Sluices will only provide ore if a vein of that specific ore was found during the initial scan. The production of gems is completely random and independent of the scanned area. Sluices are more likely to give lower quality gems, and have an extremely low chance to also give diamonds of all qualities.

Sluices have a maximum capacity of 50 soil, which can be filled with either a gold pan or blocks of gravel or sand. A gold pan can be used to Rmb.png Right Click on the sluice and provide it with 7 soil. Alternatively, blocks of gravel or sand can be dropped (Default: Q) into the water flowing into the top of the sluice. If the sluice is not at maximum capacity, the individual block will be consumed when it comes in contact with the top of the sluice, providing 20 soil. Any excess soil added to a full sluice that would result in a value higher than 50 is simply destroyed. If the sluice is at maximum capacity, the block will simply float at the top of the sluice until space is available.


By default, sluices can permanently overwork a chunk, meaning that sluices and gold pans can no longer be used in that chunk, and must be moved elsewhere. Both gold pans and sluices use the same counter in a chunk, with sluices allowing a higher value on this counter before they stop working. Multiple sluices can be running in the same chunk, which will simply overwork the chunk faster. This system has been implemented to prevent players from easily converting gravel and sand to an infinite source of ore.


Because source blocks of water cannot be moved with wooden buckets, sluices are often built near already existing water sources. Sluices are placed in the same way as a vanilla bed, so players must face the same direction as the water stream; with the water to their back, and use the sluice to Rmb.png Right Click on the dry block closest to the player. Sluices can use either fresh or salt water, but the flowing water must travel the maximum distance possible, with the sluice placed after it. The sluice requires solid blocks on its sides, and an air block at the base for the water to flow into.

  • If the sluice has been unloaded while it was running, the interface may freeze. Feeding the sluice more soil will update the interface.


  • With the default config settings, a single chunk with an ore vein within scanning range will produce an average of 2.5 pieces of ore if the sluice is only fed gravel, and a gold pan has not been used in the chunk.
  • With the default config settings, a single chunk will produce an average of 2.25 gems if the sluice is only fed sand, and a gold pan has not been used in the chunk.
  • A single block of sand has a 1 in 20,800 chance of producing a single exquisite diamond when fed to a sluice.
