There are three kinds of buckets currently available in Terrafirma:

Metal Buckets

Metal Buckets are large items and thus stack up to four.

Blue Steel Bucket

A Blue Steel Bucket serves a similar purpose to a vanilla bucket, but is more limited in its uses. It can only pick up lava source blocks. It is totally unable to pick up water of any kind.

Wooden Bucket

Wooden buckets are medium items and thus stack up to eight.

A Wooden Bucket serves a similar purpose to a vanilla bucket, but is much more limited in its uses. It is used as a way of transferring water to devices such as Barrels, but cannot place flowing or source water. Right-clicking on the ground with a water bucket will simply empty its contents without placing them in the world. It is totally unable to pick up lava (as would be expected of a wooden item). Wooden buckets can also be used to transport Vinegar, in order to create Cheese.

The wooden bucket can be used to milk cows, and when filled with milk can be consumed to remove the poisoned effect on a player. (You can't craft the vanilla cake right now)
